To obtain the subject high-purity compound in a high degree of conversion, by reacting methyl (meth)acrylate with an alcohol by using tetramethyl titanate as a catalyst and a specific N-oxyl compound as a polymerization inhibitor.
Methyl (meth)acrylate in an amount of 1.2-3.0 mols is reacted with 1 mol of a 3-20C alcohol (e.g. n-propanol, isopropanol, n-butanol or the like) by using preferably 0.0005-0.01 mol of tetramethyl titanate as a catalyst and preferably 100-800 ppm based on methyl (meth)acrylate of an N-oxyl compound of the formula [R1 to R4 are each an alkyl; R5 is H, OH, a group of the formula, OR or OCOR (R is a 1-18C alkyl, alkenyl or aryl) or the like] (e.g. 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl or the like) as a polymerization inhibitor at 60-150°C to give the objective compound.
