It is preferably obtained by hydrogenating terephthalic acid in water as the solvent in the presence of a palladium catalyst, separating the resultant reaction liquid from the catalyst, filtering the mixed solution of the cis and trans isomers (the trans compound preferably accounting for 30% or more of the total isomers) kept at an elevated temperature, to produce trans-1,4- cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid, esterifying the trans compound with an alcohol (preferably methyl alcohol).
