Abstract:

To safely obtain the subject compound useful as the synthetic precursor of homogentisic acid used as a raw material for synthesizing chemical agents for photography and medicines, etc., by one process reaction in simple operations by reacting cyclohexanedione with glyoxylic acid.

This method for producing homogentisic lactone comprises reacting (A) 1,4-cyclohexanedione with (B) glyoxylic acid preferably in a larger A:B molar ratio than 1:1 preferably in the absence of a solvent preferably at 160-190°C for 2-3 hr and subsequently purifying the reaction product, for example, with silica gel chromatography using n-hexane/ethyl acetate.
