To obtain the subject compound in an excellent yield, by thermally decomposing trifluoromethane and bringing the thermal decomposition product into contact with a fluorinating catalyst.
This method for producing a hydrofluoroalkane has a stage in which the flow of trifluoromethane in a gas phase is subjected to thermal decomposition at a temperature higher than 700°C, preferably 950-1,050°C under atmospheric pressure for 5-50 milliseconds and a stage in which a gas mixture produced from the thermal decomposition stage is brought into contact with a fluorinating catalyst preferably in a gas phase at 250-350°C under atmospheric pressure for 1-30 seconds to give pentafluoroethane and/or 1,1,1,2,3,3,3- heptafluoropropane. The thermal decomposition reactor is preferably an empty tube reactor. Preferably trifluoromethane to be fed to the thermal decomposition reactor is pure, diluted with an inert gas and/or a circulation product (e.g. perfluorocyclobutane or tetrafluoroethylene).
