Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To markedly reduce an electrolytic voltage and to remarkably improve the cost and energy balance of the whole system by partially adopting a photocatalyst technology very low in cost in a technology producing hydrogen from water by electrolysis using a solar energy.
SOLUTION: This system comprises a step in which oxygen is generated from an aq. soln. containing an iron (III) ion by using a light energy and the photocatalyst, a step in which the iron (III) ion is reduced to an iron (II) ion in the presence of the photocatalyst and an electrolyzing step in which the iron (III) ion is regenerated by electrolyzing the aq. soln. containing the iron (II) ion formed in the pre-stage and the hydrogen is generated.
