Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain a hydrogenated polymer excellent in heat resistance, weathering resistance, etc., without lowering the catalytic activity too much by hydrogenating a ring-opening polymer obtained from a norbornene monomer prepared by using high-purity cyclopentadiene and/or dicyclopentadiene as starting materials. CONSTITUTION:Cyclopentadiene and/or dicyclopentadiene of a purity of 99wt.% or higher and an olefin compound are subjected to a thermal addition reaction of a type of a Diels-Alder reaction to prepare a monomer of the formula (wherein X and Y are each H, a hydrocarbon group of a monovalent polar group; and m is 0-2) [e.g. 5-methyl-5-carboxymethyl-bicyclo[2,2,1]-2-heptene]. This monomer and optionally another copolymerizable monomer are subjected to ring opening polymerization, and the obtained ring opening polymer is hydrogenated. A polymer in which the norbornene monomer are substantially completely hydrogenated can be obtained, and this polymer has very high heat resistance and weathering resistance. The activity of the hydrogenating catalyst is not lowered too much in the hydrogenation reaction and the catalyst has a long life in repeated use.
