PURPOSE: To obtain a hydrogenated ring-opening polymer at a high degree of hydrogenation by hydrogenating nonarom. carbon-carbon double bonds of a ring-opening norbornene polymer in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst contg. a specific ruthenium compd.
CONSTITUTION: A norbornene deriv. of formula I (wherein A and B are each H or a 1-10C hydrocarbon group; X and Y and each, H halogen, or a monovalent org. group, and m is 0 or 1) alone or together with a copolymerizable monomer is subjected to ring-opening polymn. to give a ring-opening polymer. Then, nonarom. carbon-carbon double bonds of the polymer are hydrogenated in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst comprising a ruthenium compd. of formula II (wherein Q is halogen; T is CO, NO, etc.; and Z is PR1R2R3 wherein, R1, R2 and R3 are each alkyl, etc.), an alkali metal compd. of formula III (wherein R4 is alkyl, etc.; and M1 is Li, Na, or K), and an organoaluminum compd. of formula IV (wherein R5, R6, and R7 are each alkyl, etc.), giving the objective polymer.
