PURPOSE: To obtain a compd. useful as a synthetic intermediate of medicine, agricultural chemicals, a gloss agent of an electrochemical plating bath or a dye by cleaving a phenol ether bridge of aromatic aldehyde or acetal thereof in the presence of a zeolite catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Benzaldehyde represented by formula I (wherein R1 is alkyl, cycloalkyl or alkylaryl, R2 is H, OH or R1 and at least one R1O-phenyl ether group is present at an ortho-, meta- or para-position with respect to a formaldehyde functional group) or acetal thereof is subjected to gaseous phase reaction at 120-370°C in the presence of water by using a catalyst, especially, pentasil type zeolite to obtain an objective compd. represented by formula II. Reaction can be also performed in a liquid phase at 120-300°C.
