Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a hydroxyoxaalkylmelamine with a shorter production time and an improved quality by reacting a melamine compound and an oxaalkanolamine in the presence of an acid catalyst under a specific condition.
CONSTITUTION: A hydroxyoxaalkylmelamine represented by formula II, (wherein R1 is formula III; and R2 and R3 are each R1 or H) is obtained by reacting a melamine compound and an oxaalkanolamine represented by formula I, (wherein R' is H or a 1-4C alkyl; and (n) is 2 or 3) in the presence of an acid catalyst at 120 to 250°C. The acid catalyst is used in the reaction by an amount of from 0.01 to 0.15 mole, more preferably from 0.1 to 1 mole based on 1 mole of the melamine compound. As the acid catalyst, aluminum chloride and hypophosphorous acid are preferable. According to this method, a filtration process can be omitted, and thus the reaction time can be shortened. A hydroxyoxaalkylmelamine represented by formula II is useful as an important intermediate product in the production of an urethane. Further, it is preferable for modification of an amino plastic and a resin.
