PURPOSE: To improve the yield of a rolling material by adding powder consisting of the components resembling to the components of an ingot to the top part of the ingot just before the top part solidifies.

CONSTITUTION: The powder consisting of the resembling components adequately combined with iron powder and prescribed alloy elements such as Ni, Cr and Mo is added to the unsolidified part just before the top part of the ingot 1 completes solidification in the stage of forming the ingot 1 by a bottom pouring ingot making method. The segregation of the unsolidified part at the top of the ingot 1 is diluted and a build up part 5 is formed in this stage. The movement of both side edges toward the center is prevented even if the point corresponding to the top is rolled down when the solidified ingot 1 is rolled. The formation of the end of the rolling material to an irregular shape is thus prevented and the formation of a fish tail, etc., is decreased. The yield of the rolling material is improved by such method.
