PURPOSE: To produce an isobutylene polymer terminated with functional groups with a narrow mol.wt. distribution almost without causing side reactions.
CONSTITUTION: An isobutylene polymer having terminal tertiary halogen groups is obtd. by polymerizing a cationically polymerizable monomer component (A) contg. isobutylene, in thepresene of an org. compd. of the formula [wherein X is a halogen, or RO- or RCOO- group (wherein R is a monovalent org. group); R3 is a polyvalent arom. group or a polyvalent aliph. hydrocarbon group; R1 and R2 are each II or a monovalent hydrocarbon group; and (n) is 1-6](B) as the initiator and W chain transfer agent, a solvent (C), and a Lewis acid (D) under the conditions satisfying the relations: 0.10≤(A*)/{(A*)+(C*)}≤0.50 [wherein (A*) and (C*) are the vols. of components A and C, respectively, at -20°C under normal pressure] and 2.70≤(C#)≤6.00 [wherein (C#) is the permittivity of component C at 23°C].
