Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain 1,8-menthane diisocyanate having extremely low chlorinated impurities in high volume-efficiency by using an ester as a reaction solvent in the reaction of 1,8-menthanediamine or its hydrochloride with phosgene.

CONSTITUTION: 1,8-Menthane diisocyanate useful in the field of chemical industry, resin industry and paint industry as a raw material for polyurethane material, polyurea material or polyisocyanurate material is produced by reacting 1,8-menthanediamine or its hydrochloride with phosgene. The phosgenation reaction is carried out preferably at 100-170°C, especially 120-160°C using an ester, especially aliphatic ester or aromatic carboxylic acid ester as a reaction solvent. The objective compound can be produced on an industrial scale at a low cost while suppressing the formation of chlorinated impurities, reducing the load of the post-treatment processes such as distillation purification process and decreasing the loss caused by the thermal degradation in the post-treatment processes.
