PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound in high yield with decreased number of steps using an easily controllable low-temperature solution reaction by using α-(aminophenyl)ethanol as a starting raw material and reacting with phosgene in an inert solvent.
CONSTITUTION: An inert solvent such as o-chlorobenzene is cooled to 0-50°C and charged into a reaction flask, A prescribed amount of dissolved phosgene is introduced into the solvent maintained at -50 to +30°C (preferably 5-15°C) and, at the same time, α-(aminophenyl)ethanol dissolved in an inert solvent is dropped into the flask and reacted with phosgene to form α-(chlorocarbamoyl)ethyl chloroformate as an intermediate. The intermediate is subjected to thermal decomposition at a thermal decomposition temperature of 70-150°C (preferably 80-110°C) and the inert solvent is distilled off under a vacuum of 0.5-8mmHg to obtain the objective compound useful as a raw material for various polyurethane resins and vinyl polymers.
