Abstract:
Title compds. of formula (I): where R is H or (1-4C) alkyl, and R1 is H, (1-4C) alkyl or -(CH2)nNR2R3 where n is 1 or 2 and R2 and R3 are H or (1-4C) alkyl, and salts of (I) (R1 = H or (CH2)nNR2R3), are anti-inflammatories and analgesics. Cpds. are rpepd. by condensing (a) o-cyanobenzylbromide (III) with a p-aminophenylacetonitrile or a p-aminophenylacetic acid ethyl ester (IV), (b) phthalide, thiophthalide or phthalaldehyde with (IV), (c) phthalic anhydride or a phthalic acid, Me or Et ester with (IV) followed by partial reduction of the intermediate, and in each case (a, b and c) hydrolysing with strong acid or base to (I) (R1 = H) and (opt.) esterifying.
