PURPOSE: To industrially and advantageously obtain the title compound useful as a medicine, etc., by reacting fumaric acids with NADH, etc., NH4+ and indole in the presence of plural specific enzymes containing an enzyme derived from a microorganism cultivated using malic acids as a main carbon source.
CONSTITUTION: Fumaric acid or a salt thereof is reacted with metallic ions and oxidized form nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) or reduced form nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH), ammonium ions and indole in the presence of (A) fumarase, (B) pyruvicmalic carboxylase, (C) tryptophanase and (D) NADH oxidase. In the process, the components (B) and (C) derived from a microorganism [e.g. Escherichia.coli K-12 YK3002 (FERM P-8844)] cultivated by using malic acid or a salt thereof as a main carbon source are used to afford the aimed compound.
