Abstract:

To provide the production that enables prevention of cracks from being caused in the glass fine particle deposition section, at the time of producing a large optical fiber preform having a ≥250 mm diameter of its glass fine particle deposition section and a ≥1,500 mm length of the parallel part of the section.

This production comprises: vertically placing a target bar 1 and rotating it; and operating plural glass fine particle generators 4 each directed toward this target bar 1, so as to perform reciprocating and traversing movement in the vertical direction respectively at different positions from each other in the circumferential direction, to deposit glass fine particles on the target bar 1 in both the forward and backward traverses of each of the glass fine particle generators 4; wherein the thickness of glass fine particles deposited by a single traversing motion of each of the plural glass particle generators 4 is adjusted to ≤100 μm.
