Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain a latex having high water-resistance with decreased amount of emulsifier in high stability and efficiency by carrying out emulsion-polymerization of a part of monomers having specific water-solubility and composition of the components in water in the presence of a decreased amount of emulsifier and polymerizing the residual monomers in the presence of the produced latex. CONSTITUTION:The objective latex can be produced by (1) using a monomer composition A having a composition expressed by formula I [A is monomer composition; Mk is amount (pts.wt.) of each monomer component; i is kind of the monomer] and containing each monomer component in an amount expressed by formula II [Sk is solubility of each monomer in water at 20 deg.C (gram of monomer dissolving in 100g of water); W is amount (pts.wt) of water used in the polymerization; K is 5], selecting a composition wherein >=40wt.% of the monomer component has Sk of <=0.5 and carrying out the emulsion-polymerization of 0.05-5 pts.wt. of the monomer composition A in the presence of 100-1,000 pts.wt. of water using an emulsifier of an amount less than twice the critical micelle concentration and (2) selecting a monomer composition B wherein >=60wt.% of the monomer component has Sk of 0.5 and polymerizing 99.95-95 pts.wt. of the monomer composition B in the presence of the latex produced by the step (1).
