Abstract:

To produce the subject compound efficiently and safely, having a very large dielectric constant anisotropy (Δ) and capable of imparting a high resistivity value and electric voltage retention ratio to a liquid crystalline composition.

This method of producing a liquid crystal compound having 2-(3,4,5-trifluorophenyl)ethyl group, is constituted by reacting 2-(3,4,5- trifluorohalogenzene) (e.g. 1-bromo-3,4,5-trifluorobenzene) with magnesium or lithium to form an organometallic compound (a Grignard reagent), then reacting the Grignard reagent with a linear aldehyde containing cyclohexane ring of formula I [R is a 1-10C alkyl; the cyclohexane ring has a trans configuration; (m), (n)=0 or 1 and when (m)=1, n=1], dehydrating the obtained alcoholic compound to obtain a styrene derivative and further performing hydrogenation to produce an objective compound expressed by formula II.
