PURPOSE: To obtain a low-aromatic hydrocarbon ail, excellent in light fastness and useful as cleaning solvents, insecticides, etc., and scarcely containing aromatics by hydrotreating a petroleum distillate under specific conditions in two stages.
CONSTITUTION: A petroleum distillate oil having ≤50ppm sulfur content and 5-20wt.% aromatic content is initially brought into contact with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrotreating catalyst prepared by supporting a hydrogenating active metal selected from group VIb and VIII metals of the periodic table on a refractory inorganic oxide (preferably prepared by supporting cobalt- molybdenum, nickel molybdenum, etc., on an alumina carrier) at 290-355°C under 50-150kg/cm2 pressure to reduce the aromatic content of the distillate oil to <1wt.%. The resultant product oil is then brought into contact with hydrogen in the presence of the hydrotreating catalyst at 120-280°C under 50-150kg/cm2 pressure to afford the objective product. Furthermore, the form of a hydrotreating reactional column is preferably a fixed bed.
