PURPOSE: To produce a low-MW PE of good color without a step of catalyst removal, by (co)polymerizing ethylene under a specified condition in the presence of a catalyst system comprising a specified solid catalyst component and an organoaluminum compound.
CONSTITUTION: A solid catalyst component (A) is obtained by reacting (a) an oxygen-containing organic compound of Mg (e.g., magnesium diethoxide) with (b) a halide of Ti (e.g., TiCl4) or reacting component (a) with (c) an oxygen-containing organic compound (e.g., tetraethoxytitanium) and (d) a halide of Al (e.g., ethylaluminum dichloride) in an inert hydrocarbon solvent. Ethylene is polymerized or copolymerized with a small amount of an α-olefin in the presence of a catalyst system comprising component A and (B) an organoaluminum compound (e.g., triethylaluminum) in a saturated hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of hydrogen in an amount 1W30 times, by moles, that of ethylene at 120W250°C to obtain a low-MW PE having a density of 0.85W0.98 and a viscosity-average MW of 500W30,000.
