PURPOSE: To readily obtain titled polymer having a desired microstructure, by using an organic Li compound as a polymerization catalyst and a combination of a specified surfactant and an ether compound as a promotor, in the production of titled diene type polymer.
CONSTITUTION: A diene type low-MW polymer useful as an adhesive or a sealant, is prepared by (co)polymerizing a conjugated diolefin, e.g., butadiene or isoprene, with an aromatic vinyl compound, e.g., α-methylstyrene. In this polymerization, there are used an organic Li compound, e.g., ethyllithium, as a polymerization catalyst and a combination of an anionic surfactant having a hydrophilic group of the formula: -SO3K or -OSO3K, and an ether compound, e.g., diethyl ether, as a promotor. Then, titled polymer is obtained by (co)polymerizing monomers in a solvent containing at least 20wt% of an alkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g., toluene.
