PURPOSE: To obtain a low-sulfur gas oil excellent in the hue by treating a specific petroleum distillate oil under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: (A) 5-90vol.% of a petroleum distillate oil containing 0.1-2.0wt.% of sulfur and having a boiling point of 150-400°C and (B) 95-10vol.% of a petroleum distillate oil containing 0.1-3.0wt.% of sulfur and having boiling point of 250-650°C in which a fraction having boiling point of >400°C is contained in an amount of ≥10wt.% are mixed with each other. The obtained mixture is made to contact with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst under the following conditions: a reaction temperature of 350-450°C, LHSV of 0.1-5h-1, a hydrogen partial pressure of 30-100kgf/cm2 and a hydrogen/oil ratio of 1000-5000scf/bbl. The hydrogenation catalyst to be used in this process is e.g. a desulfurization catalyst for a vacuum gas oil or a mild hydrocracking catalyst and prepared by supporting a metal having hydrogenation activity, e.g. cobalt. The product of this hydrogenation treatment is subjected to fractional distillation to obtain the objective low-sulfur gas oil containing ≤0.05wt.% of sulfur and having hue of ≥-10 in Saybolt value and a boiling point of 150-400°C.
