Abstract:

To obtain the subject composition capable of manifesting high cleanness by including a specific over based sulfurized alkaline earth metal phenate and an aromatic component in a specific proportion.

This composition comprises (A) an over based sulfurized alkaline earth metal phenate having 550-700 mgKOH/g base number and (B) a lubricant base oil containing 1-10 wt.% aromatic component. Further, the composition preferably contains 8-32C fatty acids or a salt thereof. The base number of this composition is preferably 10-200 mgKOH/g, and cleanliness evaluation by the hot tube test is over 5.5 points. The component A can be obtained by reacting an alkaline earth metal reagent with phenols, sulfur, a dihydric alcohol, and distilling off the excess dihydric alcohol and water from the obtained product, and further distilling off the phenols from the bottom product of the distillation column.
