Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a high-quality magnesia whisker having highly grown crystal by baking a formed powdery mixture of Mg and Al metal or Mg-Al alloy, magnesia and carbon in a reducing atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: The objective whisker is produced by baking a formed powdery mixture of Mg and Al metal and/or an Mg-Al alloy, magnesia and carbon in a reducing atmosphere. The reducing baking condition of the formed material depends upon the texture of the formed material, the kind of furnace, etc., and it is preferable to heat the material from about 500°C at a definite heating rate and keep the material at the maximum temperature of about 1500°C for 1-4hr, preferably about 1.5-3hr. A large amount of highly grown magnesia whisker can be produced on an industrial scale at a low cost with a relatively easy operation from inexpensive raw materials. The magnesia whisker produced by this method is suitable as an industrial material for reinforcing ceramics, plastics or metals.
