To provide a method for producing an Mg base composite material capable of securely showing a spontaneous infiltrating phenomenon not only in an inert gas atmosphere such as gaseous argon, but also in an atmosphere of forming a protective film on the surface of Mg molten metal used in actural operation, in which the applicable range is wide compared to the method of reducing the pressure in a reinforcing material and restrictions are not put on various conditions in actural operation.
This method for producing an Mg base composite material is the one in which an infiltrating assistant is mixed to a reinforcing material or a molded body of a reinforcing material is applied with an infiltrating assistant, and the mixture obtd. by the mixing or the one obtd. by coating the molded body of the reinforcing material with the infiltrating assistant is brought into contact with the molten metal of Mg or an Mg alloy to infiltrate the molten metal into the reinforcing material. Then, by applying vibration to the molten metal, a spontaneous infiltrating phenomenon is shown.
