PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic recording medium having excellent durability by treating a magnet coated film with a volatile gaseous catalyst at the time when said film passes the inside of an orienting magnetic field.

CONSTITUTION: The catalyst is brought into uniform contact with the magnetic layer by executing the treatment by the vapor of the gaseous catalyst during the stage of executing the magnetic field orienting treatment after applying of a magnetic coating compd. on a nonmagnetic base and after drying of the coated film. Furthermore, a crosslinking reaction is accelerated by heating in the subsequent drying stage. The volatile catalyst to be used as the catalyst includes amine compds. such as triethylamine, trimethylamine, ethyldimethylam ine and diethylmethylamine. The durability is thereby improved.
