PURPOSE: To produce a metal gasket having superior performance and formativeness by successively subjecting a substrate of martensitic stainless steel blended with Si, Cu or Ti to coating with an elastic layer, working into a prescribed shape and specified subzero treatment.
CONSTITUTION: One side or both sides of a metal substrate of martensitic stainless steel blended with Si, Cu or Ti as a precipitation hardening element are coated with an elastic layer composed of a matrix of synthetic rubber, synthetic resin, etc., and additives such as a filler, a curing agent and an age resistor. The coated metal substrate is blanked into a desired shape and the opening is subjected to bead working. The substrate is then subjected to subzero treatment by aging at -10 to -80°C for 1-10 min to increase the Vickers hardness Hv to 200-600. A metal gasket having high hardness, a high spring constant, high corrosion resistance, satisfactory airtightness, thermal deformation resistance, a high degree of freedom of bead shape, satisfactory elastic layer retentivity and superior sealing performance is obtd.
