Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obviate the ignition and combustion of impurities and the generation of nitrides, thereby stably obtaining high quality metal titanium by introducing oxygen into a reactor vessel before refined metal titanium is taken out of this reaction vessel.
CONSTITUTION: After the inside of the reactor vessel 1 is substd. with argon, molten magnesium is injected from a flange 4 and is dropped from a titanium tetrachloride dropping pipe 5. The titanium tetrachloride is reduced and the reactor vessel and the metal titanium and magnesium chloride are formed in the reactor vessel 1. The impurities included in the formed metal titanium are removed by vacuum separating and refining and gaseous argon is filled into the reactor vessel 1 to cool the inside of the vessel down near to room temp. The oxygen or a gaseous mixture composed of the oxygen and an inert gas is introduced from a valve 8 disposed in correspondence to a spacing 9 between a vessel body 2 and a vessel cap 3 prior to taking out of the metal titanium 7. The amt. of the oxygen to be introduced is confined to about 0.1 gram mol per ton of the formed metal titanium.
