Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a new catalyst of high heat resistance for producing methacrylic acid from methacrolein advantageously.

CONSTITUTION: Molybdenum is added to a vanadium-phosphoric acid catalyst as a third component to give an oxide catalyst. The catalyst is used to effect the gas phase catalytic oxidation of methacrolein into methacrylic acid with molecular oxygen.
