To provide a method for producing an alkylimidazole at least having substituent groups at the first and second positions while producing only a small amount of a by-product being imidazole having no substituent group at the second position.
The production method of an alkylimodazole (E) represented by general formula (1) is characterized by the reaction of a glyoxal or its acetal or its ketal (a), an aldehyde (b), a primary amine (c), and ammonia (d) in the presence of an acid (f). Preferably, after inputting a part of a mixture of (c) and (d), the residue of the mixture of (c) and (d) and a mixture of (a) and (b) are simultaneously dropped. The acid (f) is preferably an acid having a pKa of 4 or lower and is preferably p-toluenesulfonic acid or sulfuric acid.
