To provide a method for efficiently producing p-xylene by regulating the concentration of the p-xylene in a mixture of xylene isomers so as to be not less than the equilibrium concentration when obtaining the xylene from a feedstock containing 9C aromatic hydrocarbons.
The method for producing the p-xylene involves bringing the feedstock containing the 9C aromatic hydrocarbons into contact with a catalytic layer comprising the first catalytic layer having a catalyst including an acid-type zeolite constituted of 12- or more-membered oxygen ring and having pores, and the second catalytic layer having an acid-type zeolite catalyst requiring ≥1,000 min before reaching the amount (measuring condition: 120°C and 1.0 Torr o-xylene vapor pressure) of adsorbed o-xylene corresponding to 1/10 of the amount (measuring condition: 120°C, 1.5 Torr p-xylene vapor pressure, and 180 min absorption time) of the adsorbed p-xylene, and arranged therein in the presence of hydrogen in vapor phase.
