PURPOSE: To obtain a molded chitin article with good workability, which has a high strength and is suitable as a stitching fiber, by dissolving chition having specified properties and lithium chloride in dimethylacetamide or N-methylpyrrolidone, and molding the mixture by a wet process.
CONSTITUTION: The external skeleton of crustacea is drived, curshed, treated with an acid or an alkali to sufficiently remove calcium and protein, and then subjected to an acid treament with hydrochloric acid to prepare chitin having a viscosity of 15W600cP at 30°C when 0.2g of chitin is dissolved in 100g of soln. obtd. by dissolving 2g of lithium chloride in 25g of dimethylacetamide. Then the resulting chitin and lithium chloride are dissolved in dimethylacetamide or N- methyl-pyrrolidone. The soln. is subjected to a wet-process molding, e.g. by extruding the soln. through a nozzle having fine hales and coaqulating the extrudate in a coagulating bath to obtain the desired molded chitin article.
