To obtain the subject compound having excellent hue, etc., in high conversion and productivity with simple operability and easy removal of by- produced hydrochloric acid by sulfating an N-alkylamidoalkanol in the presence of a solvent at a low temperature and raising the temperature of the reaction system.
The objective N-alkylamidoalkanol sulfuric acid ester (salt) of formula II (M is H or a cation) is produced by sulfating an N- alkylamidoalkanol of formula I (R1 is a 6-22C straight or branched-chain alkyl, alkenyl, etc.; R2 is H or a 1-22C straight or branched-chain alkyl, etc.; R3 is a 1-5C straight or branched-chain alkylene; R4 is a 2-3C straight or branched- chain alkylene; (n) is an average addition molar number of alkylene oxide and is 0-50) with chlorosulfonic acid as a sulfating agent in the presence of a solvent at <50°C and distilling out the by-produced hydrochloric acid from the obtained reaction liquid at 50-100°C. The solvent is preferably a 5-10C straight, branched or cyclic alkane.
