Abstract:
PURPOSE: To produce at a high yield the subject polymer excellent in dissociation properties in the basic region by subjecting an N-vinylformamide polymer to a specific reaction to form a specific N-vinylamine polymer.
CONSTITUTION: An N-methylvinylamine polymer having repeating units of formulas II and III is produced by hydrolyzing an N-vinylformamide polymer having repeating units of formula I pref. under a basic condition, if necessary adjusting the pH to 3-7 by forther adding formic acid and/or formate in the presence of formic acid and/or formate produced by hydrolysis, and methylating the hydrolyzed polymer with formaldehyde.
