Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain the subject epoxy resin showing a low-viscosity liquid state at the ordinary temperature and suitable for an electronic component- encapsulating material, etc., by reacting a resol with an epihalohydrin in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide and carrying out extraction and recovery of an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent-soluble resin from the resultant reaction product. CONSTITUTION:A resol (preferably obtained by the reaction of a monocyclic phenol compound and a naphthalene ring phenol compound with an aldehyde in the presence of basic catalyst) is reacted with an epihalohydrin (e.g. epichlorohydrin) in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide (e.g. sodium hy droxide) and the resultant reaction product is subjected to extraction using an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent (e.g. benzene) for recovery of a soluble resin, thus obtaining the objective epoxy resin capable of providing a cured material excellent in heat resistance, water resistance and mechanical characteristics.
