To obtain the subject compound useful as a functional polymer material in a high yield simply without a specific apparatus by dripping a dienophile to a dicyclopentadiene derivative in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor.
In this method for synthesizing a compound of formula II (R15 to R22 are each H, a halogen, an alkyl or the like) from a compound of formula I (R1 to R12 are each H, a halogen, an alkyl or the like) and a compound of the formula R13XC=CYR14 (R13 and R14 are each H, a halogen, an alkyl or the like; X and Y are each H, a halogen, an alkyl or the like and at least one of X and Y is an electron attractive group), the compound of formula I is heated in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor (e.g. phenol) to ≥150°C and the compound of the formula is dripped to the compound of formula I to give the objective compound (e.g. 5-carboxy-2-norbornene).
