1366435 Cyclic aluminium derivatives of substituted 1,3-diols L'OREAL 10 Oct 1972 [16 Dec 1971] 46695/72 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions A5 and C4] Novel compounds having the general Formula I in which R represents Cl; -OSO 2 R1 where R1 is C 1-4 alkyl, phenyl, p-chlorophenyl, p-hydroxyphenyl, p-tolyl or 2-ono-10-bornanyl or a -O-R11 radical in which R11 is CH 3 , C 2 H 5 , isoC 3 H 7 or tertC 4 H 9 and Z is either (a) a radical of Formula II in which R 1 is (i) a COR 3 radical wherein R 3 is CH 3 or C 2 H 5 when R 2 is CH 3 , or R 3 is phenyl when R 2 is CH 3 acetyl or CO 2 -C 1-4 alkyl; (ii) a radical CO 2 C 1-4 alkyl when R 2 is CH 3 , CN or CO 2 C 1-4 alkyl; or (iii) an NO 2 radical when R 2 is Br or C 1-3 alkyl or (b) a radical of Formula III in which R, represents either (i) CH 3 , when R 6 is CO 2 -C 1-4 alkyl and R 5 is -O-C 1-4 alkyl; or (ii) a hydrogen atom when R 6 represents a COR 9 radical where R 9 is CH 3 and R 5 is CH 3 or phenyl or R 9 is phenyl and R 5 is CH 3 ; a CO 2 -C 1-4 alkyl when R 5 is CH 3 , phenyl or O-C 1-4 alkyl; or CN when R 5 is -O-C 1-4 alkyl may be prepared by reacting the appropriate #-glycol or #-carbonylalcohol with an aluminium alcoholate in an anhydrous solvent and, if desired, heating the product to cause a rearrangement and if R is Cl or OSO 2 R1 subjecting the product to reaction with HCl or a sulphonic acid. 2,2 - Bis - (hydroxymethyl) - 1 - phenyl - 1,3- butanedione and #,#-bis-(hydroxymethyl)-propiophenone are prepared by reaction of benzoylacetone and propiophenone respectively with formaldehyde in the presence of potassium carbonate. Antiperspirant compositions comprise a compound of Formula I in which R is other than -O-R11 together with a suitable cosmetic vehicle and other known additives for such compositions.
