Abstract:
PURPOSE: To industrially and advantageously produce an o-alkoxybenzoic acid by reacting benzoic acid having chlorine group at least the o-position as a raw material with a lower alcohol in the presence of a copper salt and an alkylamine.
CONSTITUTION: An o-chlorobenzoic acid expressed by formula I (X is H or halogen located at the m- or p-position) or a 2,6-dichlorobenzoic acid expressed by formula II is used as a raw material and reacted with a lower alcohol in the presence of a copper salt (e.g. cuprous chloride) and an alkylamine such as dimethylamine) to afford an o-alkoxybenzoic or an o-dialkoxybenzoic acid. The resultant product is useful as an intermediate for medicines, agricultural chemicals, dyes, perfumes, etc., or a functional agent such as the second chemical for dental cements or a tacky component of polymers.
