PURPOSE: To simultaneously obtain a tert. amyl alkyl ether-rich fraction and an n-pentane-rich fraction from a 5C fraction contg. isopentenes, cyclopentene and dichloropentadiene.
CONSTITUTION: An olefin-rich 5C hydrocarbon fraction contg. isopentenes is hydrogenated as feedstock with hydrogen and a sulfur compd. at 20-150°C and 5-100 bar in the presence of a catalyst contg. a group VIII noble metal, e.g. alumina carrying Pd. The hydrogenation effluent is fractionated to obtain a 5C-rich fraction and a 6C fraction. The 5C-rich fraction is sent to an isoolefin etherification zone using an alcohol such as methanol, and after distillation, the objective fractions are obtd. By the combination of the hydrogenation, etherification and separation steps, the value of the 5C fraction from steam cracking is enhanced.
