PURPOSE: To provide a method for producing an optical fiber preform in which the optical fiber preform with hardly any fluctuation in outside diameter is obtained.
CONSTITUTION: In order to achieve such purpose, this invention provides a method for producing an optical fiber preform by blowing fine glass particles on the outer periphery of a rotating target member 11 with an oxyhydrogen burner 12 traversing in the axial direction of the target member 11, depositing the fine glass particles and providing a fine glass particle deposit substance 13. In the process, conical parts (lid) and (lid) directing the tips toward the side of both ends of a product rod part (11a) of the target member 11 are provided at the ends of the rod part to deposit the fine glass particles. Thereby, the optical fiber preform with hardly any fluctuation in outside diameter can be obtained.
