To provide a method for producing an optical fiber preform so as to have a desired core-rod ratio and to produce an optical fiber having the desired core-rod ratio obtained by wire drawing the optical fiber preform produced by the method.
A porous preform having a lower core-rod ratio (core part outside diameter/clad part outside diameter) than that of a desired core-rod ratio of an optical fiber is produced and the resultant porous preform is sintered and vitrified to thereby provide an optical fiber preform. The outer peripheral part of the optical fiber preform is further removed by etching so as to afford the desired core-rod ratio in a method for sintering the porous preform, vitrifying the preform and thereby producing the optical fiber preform prior to the wire drawing in order to obtain the optical fiber.
