PURPOSE: To obtain at a low cost a process for continuously producing an optical fiber for O.T.D.R. obtd. by forming a thin film consisting of carbon, silicon carbide, silicon nitride, metal or metal alloy around a coated optical fiber into a spiral shape.
CONSTITUTION: A desired material is selected from the carbon, silicon carbide, silicon nitride, metals, metal alloys, etc., and the film thereof is formed on the surface of the fiber by a film-forming device 5 in a fiber production system. The surface of the fiber 3 emerging from the film-forming device 5 is irradiated with a laser ray 11 from the side, via a lens 10 so as to have a suitable width in its longitudinal direction, and the laser irradiation system is rotated at a specified rotating speed around the fiber axis. Since the fiber is taken up at a specified speed in its longitudinal direction, the film is spirally removed by a laser abrasion effect and is housed into a take-up section 20.
