Title:
PRODUCTION OF OPTICAL FIBER
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JP3027509
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:
PURPOSE: To make it possible to drastically shorten a sintering and annealing time by only partially sintering a jacket soot boule in an inert gaseous atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: A glass core rod 20 is coated by the jacket soot boule 21. The jacket soot boule 21 is sintered by arranging it in a furnace having a heating coil 23. The portion enclosed by the heating coil 23 is a hot zone having about 1,500 to 1,600°C. The furnace is packed with the helium from a helium source or the nitrogen from a nitrogen source. Valves 27, 28 respectively control the entrance of the helium and the nitrogen into the furnace. The jacket boule 21 is heated by passing it through the hot zone and lowering while rotating the same. Only the helium from the helium source is fed by the valve into the furnace during the initial sintering step and the velocity of flow thereof is about 30 liter/min.
