Abstract:

PURPOSE: To enable the mass production of (S) and (R) isomers of an alkyl methylbutanoate in high optical purity by effecting the optical resolution using an enzyme which can hydrolyze alkyl methylbutanoate in high optical selectivity.

CONSTITUTION: An enzyme which can hydrolyze the substrate in high optical selectivity (from Aspergillus oryzae, Aspergillus malleus, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens) and/or a microorganism producing such enzyme (Serratia marcescens) are allowed to act on an alkyl methylbutanoate or an alkoxyalkyl 2-methylbutanoate to effect the resolution into optically active (S)-2-methyl- butanoic acid, (R)-alkyl 2-methylbutanoate or (R)-alkoxyalkyl 2-methylbutanoate.
