To inexpensively produce an optically active phenylpropionic acid derivative through the process suitable for industrial production by condensation reaction between optically active hydroxymethylphenylpropionic acid and an amino acid ester, converting the hydroxy group to an eliminable group and replacing the eliminable group with acetylthio group.
An optically active 2-hydroxymethyl-3-phenyl-propionic acid of formula I is allowed to react with an amino acid ester to convert it to an optically active N-[2-hydroxymethyl-1-oxo-3-phenylpropyl]-amino acidic ester. Then, the hydroxyl group in the hydroxymethyl group at the 2-position is activated to convert it to an optically active N-acylamino acid ester of formula III (X is chlorine, bromine, iodine or the like). Further, the product is allowed to react with a thioacetic acid salt or with thioacetic acid in the presence of a base to prepare the objective optically active N-[2-(acetylthiomethyl)-1-oxo-3- phenylpropyl]-amino acid ester.
