PURPOSE: To obtain desired fluoride at a high yield by converting tetrafluorocyclobutane to octafluorocyclobutane to a desirable extent by a Simons electrolytic fluorination method.
CONSTITUTION: A soln. of a part of the 1,1,2,2-tetrafluorocyclobutane is converted to the octafluorocyclobutane to the desirable extent by the Simons electrolytic fluorination method. The volatile octafluorocyclobutane, tetrafluorocyclobutane and gaseous effluent contg. hydrogen fluoride are recovered by effecting a fluorination reaction while minimizing the evaporation of the imperfectly fluorinated and unreacted cyclobutane. The recovered matter is condensed by cooling to recover a first liquid contg. the octafluorocyclobutane and the second liquid contg. the hydrogen fluoride and the tetrafluorocyclobutane. Hexafluoropropylene and tetrafluoroethylene are formed by recirculating the second liquid and pyrolyzing the first liquid.
