Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain an organopolysiloxane of a low polymerization degree selectively in high yield by subjecting a trialkylchlorosilane and hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane to ring-opening reaction followed by hydrolysis of the product.

CONSTITUTION: The ring-opening reaction between (A) a trialkylchlorosilane of formula I (R is a 1-18C alkyl, aryl, H) and (B) hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane is carried out in the presence of (C) a quaternary ammonium salt of the formula: R14N+X- (R1 is a 1-18C alkyl, aryl; X is a halogen), particularly preferably trioctylmethylammonium chloride and the product is hydrolyzed to give (D) a organopolysiloxane of a low polymerization degree of the formula II (R2-R4 are an alkyl of 1-18 carbon atoms, an aryl; n is an integer). It is preferred that the organopolysiloxane has less than 1,500 molecular weight, for example, dodecamethylpentasiloxane. The component (C) is used in the reaction in an amount of 0.01-5-wt.% based on the total weight of components (A) and (B).
