PURPOSE: To readily produce an industrially useful oxygen-containing compound by using C4-LPG which is a more economical raw material without any purification treatment, and a catalyst composed of a heteropolyacid-based catalyst and/or a V-P-oxygen composite catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: This method for production of an oxygen-containing compound such as acetic acid, acrylic acid, maleic anhydride, methacrolein or methacrylic acid is carried out by using economical C4-LPG as the raw material without any treatment and conducting a gas-phase catalytic oxidation reaction with O2 in the presence of a heteropolyacid-based catalyst or a vanadium-phosphorus- oxygen composite catalyst. As the heteropolyacid-based catalyst, a catalyst represented by formula I [X is K, Cs, Rb or Ta; Y is As, Sb, Bi, Si, B or Ge; Z is Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni or Cu; (a) to (g) are each the atomic ratio of the respective elements] is preferably used. In addition, as the vanadium-phosphorus- oxygen composite catalyst, a catalyst expressed by formula II [Z is Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, etc.; (a) to (d) are each the atomic ratio of the respective elements] is preferably used. The reaction gas contains preferably about 3 to 30mol% steam.
