PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for medicines, etc. in high yield in one stage without forming by-products, by reacting a p-iodo aromatic amino compound with a cyano compound in a solvent in the presence of a copper based catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A p-iodo aromatic amino compound, e.g. p-iodoaniline, is reacted with a cyano compound, e.g. sodium cyanide, in a solvent, e.g. methanol or ethanol, in the presence of a copper based catalyst, e.g. cuprous cyanide, cuprous iodide or copper sulfate, to afford the aimed p-amino aromatic nitrile compound, e.g. p-aminobenzonitrile. A p-iodo aromatic amino compound obtained by electrolytically oxidizing an iodide in an aqueous medium and reacting the resultant compound with an aromatic amino compound, is used as the above-mentioned p-iodo aromatic amino compound.
