PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound without requiring special equipment or treatment in high yield and quality, by reacting hydroquinone with hydrogen peroxide in water, inert and polar organic solvent and/or acidic water solution in the presence of I2, HI or a metal iodine compound.
CONSTITUTION: Hydroquinone, i.e. p-dioxybenzene is reacted with hydrogen peroxide in water, acidic water solution (e.g. 0.5W10% diluted sulfuric acid or diluted hydrochloric acid water solution), inert and polar organic solvent (especially preferably isopropyl alcohol) or water and inert and polar organic solvent in the presence of iodine, hydrogen iodide or a metal iodine compound to provide p-benzoquinone useful as a polymerization inhibitor, stabilizer for unsaturated polyester monomer raw material, intermediate for medicine, agricultural chemical and dye, etc. The above-mentioned method is carried out advantageously on an industrial scale without causing trouble in safety and hygiene and antipollution measure.
